Lizzy Guyton '06 returned to campus on Tuesday, April 10 to share the role that writing has played in her career. She is currently the communications director for Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker P’15 and has spent her career as a communications professional for Members of Congress and on high stakes congressional campaigns in New Hampshire and Indiana.
Lizzy spoke to a large crowd of students and faculty members in Frost Library about how her classes in writing at Governor’s were the beginning of her eventual career in political communications. She told students that it was in the classroom at Governor’s that she first discovered her passion for writing. She described to students the importance that writing has had on her career.
Of her former student, Academic Dean Elaine White said, "We have been watching Lizzy's trajectory and we have caught up with her at a variety of alumni events. We love to get alumni back to talk with students and help to form a bridge from one world to the next. It helps for students to imagine themselves in similar situations or professions in the future. Lizzy credits Governor’s because we built a strong foundation of writing skills into her repertoire. We supported her as she gained confidence in her abilities and advocated for herself. Those skills have been instrumental in her success."
Lizzy studied at Union College where she majored in English. After working on a successful senate campaign in New Hampshire, Lizzy worked for Senator Kelly Ayotte in Washington, D.C. and later moved to Indiana to head up communications for Congresswoman Jackie Walorski in Indiana’s Second District. After serving as Walorski’s communications director for her first term in office, Guyton headed back to New England to serve as communications director for Scott Brown in a high profile senate race against incumbent Senator Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire. In 2015, Guyton was hired as press secretary for Governor Charlie Baker where she specializes in media relations and crisis management.
Thank you for a wonderful, engaging evening for our students, Lizzy!
